Boulder, Utah is a jewel in a geologic showcase called Southern Utah. Part of the vast open slickrock country, it is also different, a microcosm of geologic riot.

Entering from the north on Highway 12 -- the only USDOT All American Road in Utah -- you wind your way over Boulder Mountain and the Aquarius Plateau, a true alpine environment fragmented by colorful, towering sandstone cliffs and deep gorges. Coming to Boulder from the south, you traverse the Hog's Back where the highway literally winds along the spine of a giant Navajo sandstone ridge just wide enough for a two lane road. It drops off for hundreds of feet on either side, shaking up the vertically challenged. Given the demands of road building in this country, it is easy to see why Boulder, Utah was the last place in the lower 48 states still getting mail delivered by mule pack string in the 1940's.<BR>
