Anyone who loves the outdoors combined with sheer natural beauty will likely be attracted to Boulder, Utah. Ten minutes north of town and you are well up Boulder Mountain. Almost any summer day can be spent trekking in 70 degree weather among the aspen, ponderosa pine, hundreds of lakes and streams with good back country fishing. And best of all, it is remote enough not see another person outside your group.

The same is true of the desert. Ten minutes south on Highway 12 or east on the Burr Trail and you are in some of the most remote hiking country in the lower 48. The Escalante River drainage is so vast and open that you could spend a lifetime trying to capture its nuances and explore it all.

Boulder is also developing a diverse culture for such a small town. Mix in some old hippies and new yuppies, some backpackers and bird watchers, while the descendants of the Mormons settlers and the cowboys seem (mostly) to be adjusting to it all. There's even a stellar restaurant owned by two Buddhists (Oprah Magazine, Aug. '03). |
